Dragan-Fruit, also known as pitaya, is a tropical fruit native to Mexico and Central America, with a crunchy consistency and subtle sweet taste. They are rich in unique antioxidants, including betalains.
Betalains are found in the pulp of red dragon fruit and are responsible for exerting a deep red/pink pigment. A 2004 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that Betalains prevented LDL “bad” cholesterol from being oxidized. Once oxidized, this LDL cholesterol promotes inflammation in your blood vessels, which may lead to coronary heart disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes mellitus.
In mice studies, both red and white pulp dragon fruit have been shown to reduce insulin resistance and fatty liver. Insulin resistance occurs when your cells don’t respond to insulin as a result of elevated sugar levels over long periods of time, and ultimately contributes to diabetes mellitus and fatty liver. This beneficial affect was attributed to positive changes to the gut microbiome.
